Australia has a long history of ingenious solutions that have shaped global technology, agriculture, safety, and daily life. The Royal Australian Mint has honoured these milestones with the newly released Bright Ideas collection. The highlight of this release is the 2026 Bright Ideas $2 Proof Coin. It thrills collectors and enthusiasts with a beautifully crafted tribute to local ingenuity.
Unlike individual coins that feature single inventions, this proof edition displays all five featured innovations on one central design. Surrounding a central lightbulb with an outline of Australia, the coin illustrates five transformative inventions: the stump jump plough, the jaffle maker, the black box flight recorder, the baby safety capsule, and high-speed Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology.
Honouring Five World-Changing Inventions
Each invention highlighted on the coin reflects a practical response to a real-world problem.
-
Stump Jump Plough: Patented in 1876 by Richard Smith, this agricultural breakthrough allowed farmers to clear land efficiently without destroying equipment on hidden tree roots.
-
Jaffle Maker: Invented in 1949 by Dr Ernest Smithers and popularized globally by Breville, it revolutionized quick, warm meals in households.
-
Black Box Flight Recorder: Created in 1953 by Dr David Warren, this essential aviation instrument records voice and data to improve flight safety worldwide.
-
Baby Safety Capsule: Developed to protect infants during travel, this innovation transformed road safety standards for young passengers.
-
High-Speed Wireless LAN: Developed by CSIRO in the 1990s, this technology laid the foundation for modern Wi-Fi connectivity across the globe.
